Victoria, BC – Victoria Golden Tide Head Coach Curtis Pelletier is pleased to announce today the full coaching and training staff that will guide the team during their inaugural season of the Canadian College Baseball Conference (CCBC), which begins fall play this September.

Of note is the addition of Victoria native and former Los Angeles Dodger pro Kyle Orr, who will serve as Hitting Coach. Joining Orr is Pitching Coach Ethan Fox, Third Base Coach Aaron Witzke, Assistant Coach Shawn Loglisci, Assistant Coach Ryan Haines, Strength and Conditioning Coach Jeremy Cordle and Athletic Therapist Tanner McGaw.

Orr was an all-star player in the BC Premier Baseball League and enjoyed success with Team BC at the 2004-2005 Canada Cups and with the Junior National team, winning bronze at the Worlds in 2006. He was offered a full scholarship to the University of Kentucky, but turned that down when the Los Angeles Dodgers selected him in the 4th round of the 2006 MLB entry draft. Orr spent five years as a position player in the Dodgers organization and then played a year for the Victoria Seals in the independent Golden League. In 2021 he signed as a pitcher with the Minnesota Twins and finished his pro playing career as a player/coach of the Montpellier Baracudas of the French Elite League.

“I’m thrilled to be joining the Golden Tide coaching staff for the inaugural season,” says Orr. “This program will play a vital role in developing the next generation of baseball talent, and will create endless opportunities for its players. I’m ready to get to work with our athletes and coaching staff and look forward to building an elite level program dedicated to the development of its players.”

Pitching coach Ethan Fox will be familiar to Victoria fans as he played for the Victoria HarbourCats in the 2017-2019 seasons. From Campbell River, BC, Fox played for the Parksville Royals (PBL 2013-2015) and Douglas College Royals (NWAC 2015-2017), before heading to the Avila University Eagles of the NAIA for the 2017-2019 seasons. He is the Pitching / Arm Care Coordinator of the HarbourCats Players Club and is currently completing his BSc in Kinesiology at the University of Victoria.

Third base coach Aaron Witzke played three years of college baseball at Vancouver Island University where he received a Diploma in Physical Education and then completed is Bachelor of Education at the University of Victoria and will begin the Masters of Education program there this fall. He is currently a teacher at Esquimalt High School and the Director of a Baseball Operations at the HarbourCats Players Club.

Another Victoria native, Assistant Coach Shawn Loglisci caught the eyes of the scouts in 2005 when he was drafted in the 34th round by the Dodgers, but chose instead to go to college where he played at Vancouver Island University, College of Southern Idaho and Indiana Tech University. He played for the Victoria Royals during their brief pro stint here and for a number of senior men’s teams including the Langley Blaze, Victoria Mavericks and Regina Red Sox and has coached the Victoria Eagles in the BCPBL from 2010-2015. He is now also working as the Junior Coordinator of the HarbourCats Players Club.

Assistant Coach Ryan Haines grew up in Calgary where he played at the Alberta Baseball Academy and at the Babe Ruth level during high school. He played college ball at the Prairie Baseball Academy in Lethbridge and Mayville State University and was a member of Team Alberta in 1997, where he won a bronze medal at the Canada Summer Games. He also won a summer league National Championship playing for the St. Albert Tigers.

Originally from Cardiff, Wales, Strength and Conditioning Coach Jeremy Cordle is a graduate of St. Michaels University School in Victoria where he was the Island’s top Male athlete in 1991 and was runner up for the same award at Provincial level. Jeremy has been part of multiple city, Island and provincial tittles in Basketball, Track and field , Cricket and Rugby as an alum of the Castaway Wanderers Rugby Club where he was a member of 4 provincial championship winning squads and a National Champion with the Vancouver Island Crimson tide (VIRU). Jeremy has worked as a private athletic trainer for the last 11 years , working with athletes at elementary, high school, university, professional and masters level.

Another face familiar to HarbourCats fans is Athletic Therapist Tanner McGaw. McGaw is part of the Camosun College Athletic and Exercise Therapy clinic (AET) and has been the lead Athletic Therapist for the HarbourCats for the past six years. He will be joined and assisted by student Athletic Therapists over the course of the season.

The Canadian College Baseball Conference, is an eight-team domestic league for university students that in addition to Victoria, has teams in Nanaimo (Vancouver Island University), Kelowna (Okanagan College), Kamloops (Thompson Rivers University), Chilliwack/Abbotsford (University of the Fraser Valley), Calgary (University of Calgary), Lethbridge (Prairie Baseball Academy) and Edmonton (Edmonton Collegiate Baseball Club).

The Golden Tide begin their fall exhibition season on September 11, with 11 home games, plus inter-squad games at Wilson’s Group Stadium at Royal Athletic Park in Victoria. The fall home opener is on Friday, September 17th at 6:00 pm against Thompson Rivers University.

Victoria HarbourCats – Riverhawks hit double digits, beat Cats in series opener

EDMONTON, A.B. – The Edmonton Riverhawks handed the Victoria HarbourCats their first loss of the season, winning 13-3 Tuesday night.

Hawks shortstop Robert Phelps set the tone early, leading off the bottom of the first with a home run off Cats starter Carson Burks (Hill College). The lefty from Buna, Texas, made his second appearance of the season after an impressive debut in Kelowna. He didn’t fare as well tonight, giving up three earned runs on six hits in three innings of work, striking out a pair.

BOX SCORE

The hosts continued to tack on runs early, jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the third inning. Edmonton put the game beyond doubt with a four-run fourth inning giving, them a resounding 8-0 advantage.

Curtis McKay (Niagara) got the HarbourCats on the board in the fifth inning with a sacrifice fly. The second basemen had two hits, including a double for his second multi-hit game of the young season.

Jack Johnson (Bayler) continued his hot start to the season with an RBI single in the eighth. He now has a four-game hit streak and leads the team with six hits.

WCL STANDINGS

Logan Shepherd (Tacoma CC), Isaiah Afework (Tacoma CC), and Xander McAfee (Texas Arlington) all made their HarbourCats debuts. Afework went one for three while McAfee had three hits and reached base four times.

Austin Lindsey (Hill College) and John Ondus (Niagara) threw two and three innings, respectively, to finish the game.

VICTORIA, B.C. — It’s the most impressive part of a Victoria HarbourCats game, and that’s saying something.

The way to the hearts of Victorians is through their stomachs and the expansive food truck offerings at Wilson’s Group Stadium at Royal Athletic Park has reached legendary status — with a fun new wrinkle in 2025.

Local coffee cart Aerobic Geisha Coffee will offer a specialty menu with iced drinks and lattes, and will have a HarbourCats-themed drink as a signature.

This will be another way, aside from an ice-cold Pepsi product – the stadium and HarbourCats new soft drink supplier – to accompany one of the many returning staples at HarbourCats games — successful pairings.

The offerings are fun, and they are affordable.

“We are proud of these partnerships, and for us it’s a model that has worked to perfection — we are loyal to our great food partners, and they are loyal to our fans,” said Christian Stewart, General Manager of the HarbourCats.

In addition to the ballpark staples like hot dogs and popcorn in the City of Victoria concession — the hot dogs are exceptional! — the HarbourCats return familiar brands this summer.

Bend but dont break: NorthPaws hang on to win and sweep the Lefties

The Kamloops NorthPaws won a thrilling game on Sunday afternoon 10-9 to secure a season-opening sweep of the Port Angeles Lefties. The NorthPaws scored six runs in the top of the eighth inning but had to fight off the Lefties, who scored eight of their nine runs in the final five innings.

Once again, the Lefties got the game’s first run in the bottom of the first. After having runners on the corners with only one out, they cashed in on a chopper to first that Keegan Drinkle elected to take to the base himself for an out.

Kamloops answered when shortstop Anthony Setticasi had the bases loaded with one out and legged out a potential double-play ball that scored Kalen Applefield. In the third, second baseman Joey Marino drove in a run and would later score a run because of an error by the Lefty’s second baseman. A fourth-inning Manny Recchi sacrifice fly would put the NorthPaws up 4-1.

It was the Lefty’s turn to respond in the fifth with a one-out single that cut the lead to two. In the sixth, the Levites got a two-out rally going, capitalizing on a pair of walks, a wild pitch, and a single that scored both runners on base to tie the game. Port Angeles would take the lead later in the inning with another single. In the seventh, they kept their foot on the gas, bringing two more home with, you guessed it… another single.

The NorthPaws offence was shut down by right-handed pitcher Cade Stuart, who went three scoreless innings, giving up just one hit. Going into the top of the eighth, Stuart made way for Liam Karlson. The NorthPaws saw their opportunity and pounced.

A single and a walk set up right fielder Jared Hall, who sent an RBI single to right field. Center fielder Ethan Kodama walked and set up third baseman Kieran Gaffney with the bases loaded and nobody out. Gaffney delivered with a single that brought home two more runs, tying the game at seven all. Anthony Setticassi sent a sharp ground ball to third, and the force play at the plate was thought to have been made with the bases loaded, but the Lefties catcher didn’t have his foot on home plate, allowing the run to score and everyone reach safely. Two wild pitches would bring home the fifth and sixth runs of the inning as Kamloops sent 10 men to bat and now lead 10-7.

“It was great to see the offence stick with their approach and breakthrough in the eighth,” said Head Coach Reily Jepson.

The Lefties would hang around and score in the eighth and mount yet another two-out rally in the bottom of the ninth. A two-out bloop hit and a walk allowed the Lefties to load the bases with two outs. Righty Cade Webber was on for the save and walked his second straight batter on a controversial call on a full-count pitch that was deemed just high by the home plate umpire. Either way, a run scored, and the winning run was all of a sudden 180 feet away. Facing yet another full count, Webber delivered a high fastball in a similar shop that was called for strike three, ending the game.

“I was a little stressed, but the team seemed very composed; I trust those guys in the back end of the bullpen, and they got the job done; it was a great win,” said Jepson

For Cade Webber, it was his first appearance of the season, and it came at a crucial moment for the NorthPaws. The inning could’ve gotten away from him, but his coach had faith in his abilities.

“You can tell he loves the moment; I don’t think that phased him,” said Pitching coach Jack Slominski.

With the sweep, the NorthPaws have started 3-0 for the first time since 2022, a milestone that has the team and coaching staff excited.

“It’s awesome. Hopefully, this brings more of our fans out to home games, but before we get there, we’re going to have a tough test this week in Bellingham,” said Jepson.

The team will be off on Monday before travelling to Bellingham for a three-game series against the Bells. The NorthPaws will play their first home game on June 6th against the Kelowna Falcons.
