Seven New NightOwls Have Been Signed

Published

on

It’s a good thing the new uniform sets have some bigger sizes, with the seven players the Nanaimo NightOwls are pleased to announce today.

With the three pitchers coming from California Baptist University (CBU), and four position players from the University of Hawaii (UH), the expansion NightOwls will have plenty of size on the field when the team starts play in the West Coast League.

The hallmarks of the players signed — power arms, power bats, and athleticism.

LHP Mason McGarvey, CBU, 6-4/235

RHP Carson Olsen, CBU, 6-5/225

RHP Will St. Marseille, CBU, 6-0/205

1B/3B Grant MacArthur, UH, 6-4/240

OF Tobey Jackson, UH, 5-11/165

IF Xander Sielken, UH, 5-10/175

OF Logan Gibson, UH, 5-10/160

“I’m excited to see these guys at historic Serauxmen Stadium — there’s a lot of talent in the smaller guys, and big-body power in the monsters on the hill,” said Jim Swanson, GM of the NightOwls, who will open at home on June 3 after the team debuts on the road at Portland on May 31.

“We really like the network we have with top schools, and those programs are excited to have their players with our coaches, Head Coach Greg Frady and Pitching Coach Gorm Heimueller. It’s a big piece of the puzzle. Scouts we talked to for references had strong words about their college and pro potential.”

CBU is one of the true emerging programs in NCAA-D1 baseball, becoming a perennial power under highly-respected coach Gary Adcock. The UH Bows are now led by former University of San Diego Head Coach Rich Hill, a 1,000-game winner intent on turning Hawaii into a program that rolls toward the College World Series every year.

The schedule for the 2022 Nanaimo NightOwls (and Bars!) season is posted at nanaimonightowls.com — where fans can also find team merchandise, and get information on tickets and season memberships, which are moving fast.

“It’s exciting to see all the work being done at Serauxmen Stadium, getting ready for all the user groups, we think fans are going to enjoy the enhancements and the atmosphere of the West Coast League, and how it all ties into the community,” said Swanson.

VICTORIA, B.C. – The Wenatchee AppleSox took an early lead and did not look back Saturday night, evening up the series beating the Victoria HarbourCats 8-2.

Elijah Pelayo hit a two-run single with two outs in the first inning the give the visitors an early lead. Both runs were uneanred after a Jake Butler (George Mason) error earlier in the frame.

The Cats answered back right away through Logan Shepherd (Mercer U), who hit his team-leading sixth home run of the campaign, a two-run shot to tie the game at two.

BOX SCORE

In the top of the second inning the Sox batters continued to make good contact off of Tommy Bridges (Northwestern U) as Cade Martinez and Izzy Madariaga hit back-to-back RBI singles to double their advantage, making it 4-2.

Bridges battled from there over five innings of work, giving up nine hits, walking zero and striking out three. On the other side was Mitch Haythorn who started for Wenatchee. He struck out seven Cats over five innings of work and managed to escape a bases loaded jam in the fifth inning, getting Connor Ross (Cal Baptist) to lineout to end the threat.

WCL STANDINGS

Tyler Patrick (Fresno State) replaced Bridges and gave up a pair of runs in the sixth inning including an Adam Haight home run, his second in as many games, to extend the Sox lead to 6-2.

Victoria had the bases loaded for Ross once again in the seventh inning, but Masen Swan got the Napa, California native to groundout to end the inning.

Austin Lindsey (Hill College) replaced Patrick and pitched a three-up-three-down inning in both the seventh and the eighth. He gave up two runs in the ninth inning on a pair of RBI singles which made it 8-2 Wenatchee and put the game beyond doubt.

No quit in NightOwls, drop tight game in Kamloops

Published

on

KAMLOOPS, B.C. — Fresh off a huge 3-2 extra-innings win at home over the Corvallis Knights, the road-tested Nanaimo NightOwls refused to go easily in the start of a six-game road trip.

The NightOwls scored three times in the ninth and had the potential winning run at the plate in a 9-7 setback at the hands of the host Kamloops NorthPaws at Norbrock Stadium.

Some stats details are unavailable due to a league-wide scoring system issue, but the NightOwls scored in the first inning, and built a 4-1 lead into the latter stages when Kamloops stormed back with eight consecutive runs spread over three innings.

The NightOwls threatened, and scored, in the ninth, but fell just short — they will still look to win the series with games Saturday evening and Sunday at noon. The team will venture home on Sunday, then on Tuesday head to Edmonton to face the Riverhawks for games on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

There are just three more regular season home games for the NightOwls in 2025, a weekend series against Kamloops that starts a week from Friday (August 1-2-3), with the Friday and Saturday games at 6:35pm and the Sunday capper at 1pm. The NightOwls complete their fourth WCL regular season with a road series in Bellingham, August 4-5-6.

VICTORIA, B.C. – The Victoria HarbourCats returned to West Coast League action Friday night, beating the Wenatchee AppleSox 10-4.

Kamana Nahaku (Hawaii) got the home team on the board first with a sacrifice fly in the first inning to make it 1-0.

Adam Haight tied things up with a solo home run in the top of the third inning to level things at one.

Jack Johnson (Baylor) restored Victoria’s advantage in the bottom of the fourth with a great piece of situational hitting, driving in the run with a sacrifice fly to centre. Dillon Lopez (St. Mary’s) drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 3-1 before Nahaku cleared the bases with a grand slam to left field to blow the game wide open, extending the lead to 7-1. It was the left fielder’s first long ball of the campaign after he hit four for the Cats last season.

Shea Lake (West Texas A&M) started for the HarbourCats and has been lights out in recent weeks, producing five shutout innings in back-to-back games. He came close to matching that tonight but was still dominant, going five innings, giving up just one run, and striking out three.

WCL STANDINGS

Ryne Palmer (Cal Baptist) pitched two innings of relief, with the only mark against him being a two-out RBI single by Theo Kim in the sixth inning.

Nahaku drove in his sixth run of the game with a double in the sixth, which gave his team an 8-2 lead.

Garrett Brooks (St. Mary’s) hit his second home run of the season in the seventh inning to push the lead to 10-2.

The Sox were able to score two runs late against Carson Burks (Hill College), who pitched the final two innings for the HarbourCats, but it was too little too late as the lefty closed it out for the 10-4 win.
