OTTAWA – For the first time in two years the Women’s National Team program will return to in-person activities with the Women’s National Team Showcase that is set for August 8 – 13 in Trois-Rivières, Québec.
Forty-one athletes will take part in the six-day camp that will see participants partake in physical testing, baseball-specific testing using the latest in technology, daily practices and inter-squad games at Stade Quillorama, the home of the Frontier League’s Trois-Rivières Aigles.
“We’re thrilled to be in a position where we can have athletes participate in-person, in team and individual baseball activities,” said Women’s National Team Program Director André Lachance. “Like the rest of the world, the past year and a half has been a challenge for our program so having this showcase camp is something that we feel fortunate for, and we intend on taking advantage of our time together.”
The coaching staff will be led by Aaron Myette who took over from Lachance as Head Coach in 2019 and led the squad to a bronze medal at the COPABE Women’s Baseball Pan Am Championships.
Myette will be supported by former players turned coaches in Hannah Martensen, Kate Psota and Ashley Stephenson while Anthony Pluta will handle pitching coach duties for the first time.
Guest coaches scheduled to attend include former Women’s National Team athlete Vanessa Riopel, former Women’s National Team athlete and coach Patricia Landry along with Manitoba’s Jeremy Culleton.
Covid-19 caused the postponement of the 2020 WBSC Women’s Baseball World Cup with the next event still to be determined. Canada won a bronze medal at the last World Cup event in 2018 and came in at #3 in the latest WBSC Women’s Baseball World Rankings.
It would be fitting to see the top two teams from the Regular season’ the #1 North Fraser Nationals and the #2 Ridge Meadows Royals, go head-to-head for the 2023 18U College Prep Provincial Championship!
North Fraser entered the final tilt undefeated through the round-robin and their semi-final match, while Ridge Meadows had only stumbled once on the way there.
In the end, it was Ridge Meadows and their ability to push runs across the dish that put them on top 6-1 when the dust finally settled handing North Fraser their only loss of the weekend.
Congratulations to the Ridge Meadows Royals and all of their fans and supporters. You are the 2023 18U College Prep Provincial Champions!
Congratulations to the North Fraser Nationals and all of their fans and supporters on a stellar run to the top of the Regular Season Standings.
Congratulations to all of our 2023 18U College Prep Players, Coaches, and Families. It’s been a ride! See you in the Fall!
