Victoria HarbourCats – Four pitchers signed to return to HarbourCats in 2024

Published

on

2023 Co-Pitcher of the Year, Logan MacNeil (above), is one of four pitchers coming back to the HarbourCats for the 2024 season.

October 17, 2023

VICTORIA, B.C. — Davidson, Finn, MacNeil and Finkelstein — sounds like a $1,000-per-hour law firm with offices on Broughton and Wharf.

Instead, it’s the name of four quality arms returning to lay down the law on opposing hitters next summer at Wilson’s Group Stadium at Royal Athletic Park.

Todd Haney and Scott Anderson, the Head Coach and Pitching Coach respectively of the Victoria HarbourCats, are pleased to re-sign these four pitchers, three of them left-handers — all from the province of BC.

LHP Dustin Davidson, Brookhaven, 6-5/220, Haida Gwaii, BC
LHP Jack Finn, Illinois State, 6-1/200, Victoria, BC
RHP Logan MacNeil, Campbellsville University, 6-1/180, White Rock, BC
LHP Jake Finkelstein, Montana State-Billings, 6-0/190, Richmond, BC

“We are thrilled to bring back four great competitors to our pitching staff,” said Head Coach Haney.  “They know the championship expectations of playing in Victoria and will embrace the opportunity!”

MacNeil, the team’s co-pitcher of the year in 2023 and a first-team WCL all-star, was 6-0 with a 1.08 ERA in the regular season, making 14 appearances combined with playoffs figured in. Finkelstein was tremendous out of the bullpen with a 2.41 ERA in 22.1 innings in the regular season and then threw eight scoreless and innings, including five dominant innings in a home playoff win over Bellingham in the playoffs.

Dustin Davidson (left), Jack Finn (centre) and Jake Finkelstein (right) are all slated to return to the HarbourCats pitching corps in 2024.

Davidson and Finn joined the HarbourCats late in the season. Finn, from the Victoria Eagles and now at Illinois State, had two starts and three appearances for the HarbourCats — his best outing not making the record books as rain ended a July game early in Kamloops. He also started and posted a win in Edmonton. Davidson, a great story coming from Haida Gwaii, made five appearances and the 6-5 former Douglas College hurler didn’t allow a run over 6.1 innings combined in the regular season and playoffs.

“It’s fun to see the recruiting work of Todd and Scott and see the roster taking shape,” said HarbourCats GM Christian Stewart. “We have merchandise selling on-line,  season ticket renewals and new purchases are strong and on-going and we anticipate the 2024 schedule will be out within a few weeks as well. This is a great time of year for us.”

The HarbourCats 2024 schedule in anticipated to be released in late October or early November 2023.  Stay tuned to our website and social media channels for news on that once it becomes available.

VISL, and HarbourCats/NightOwls, enter strategic partnership

Published

on

Different sports, but the same community ideals.

The Victoria HarbourCats and Nanaimo NightOwls, of baseball’s West Coast League, and the Vancouver Island Soccer League, have entered into a strategic partnership intended to assist the entities in growing grassroots sports and improving facilities on Vancouver Island.

The VISL provides programming and championships on the Island and leads leagues which give the best soccer players an avenue to play the sport for life. Championships such as the Jackson Cup, with many finals played at Royal Athletic Park in Victoria, serve as the crown jewel of the VISL.

More than 6,000 participants are involved with the VISL — sports fans, who will keep track of the Island’s top baseball programs, the HarbourCats and NightOwls, who combined to draw more than 100,000 spectators in 2024.

The baseball teams and VISL will jointly promote each others’ schedules, and provide opportunities for youth participation.

“Baseball fans are soccer fans, and soccer fans are baseball fans — it’s about supporting quality programs on the island and furthering awareness. Adding youth opportunities between the two will be the cherry on top.”

A top-end catcher and four arms to throw strikes to him make up the latest signings for the Nanaimo NightOwls.

Published

Wirthgen has MLB bloodlines as the nephew of former MLB slugger and manager Phil Nevin, the first overall pick in the 1992 draft who played for six teams and hit 41 home runs for the Padres in 2001 as part of a 1,200-game career. A strong defensive catcher with power potential, Wirthgen played in the Alaska summer league in 2024.

Teper, also from D1 powerhouse Cal Baptist, is an aviation major who plans to fly planes once his days in pro baseball are over. The lefty will be counted on in key situations this summer, and made 11 appearances, including three starts, in the Alaska league in 2024.

Three players will arrive from the University of Pikeville, where they play for new NightOwls coach Cody Andreychuk — including returning lefty Richtter Castillo, a Venezuelan fan favorite who pitches with a lot of emotion and did strong work out of the bullpen for pitching coach Gorm Heimueller in 2024. Castillo was 1-1 with a 3.75 ERA and 17 strikeouts in 12 innings.

Shaye McTavish, a Canadian addition from Lethbridge, has been a starter at UPike and in the Western Canada summer league. Schultz, another power arm from Lethbridge, has summer experience in the WCBL in Swift Current and is developing into a high leverage righty for Andreychuk.

Season tickets and 10packs are available for 2025 and information can be found by emailing GM Tina Cornett — tina@nanaimonightowls.com
