NorthPaws Pickled in Portland – Kamloops NorthPaws

PORTLAND, ORE—The Portland Pickles successfully swept their 2023 West Coast League season series with the Kamloops NorthPaws. Playing three games at Walker Stadium, the host Pickles took the NorthPaws in straight contests. They won the season series 6-0.

The scores in this set were 4-2, 15-2 and 5-2.

Portland moves to 12-6 on the year and sit a game and a half out of first place in the WCL South Division while the NorthPaws remain in the basement of the WCL North Division at 5-19.

Kamloops winds up their longest road trip of the season tomorrow (June 30) when they play the Falcons at Elks Stadium in Kelowna. The Pickles open up a three-game set in Yakima Valley against the Pippins.

Tuesday, June 27,2023: Pickles 4 NorthPaws 2

The NorthPaws scored both their runs in the fourth inning while Portland had singles in the first, fourth, fifth and seventh.

Tyrelle Chadwick (Kamloops, BC) started on the hill for Kamloops and went five innings. He suffered his third loss of the season. Chadwick gave up six hits, three runs, walked two and struck out two.

Max Fraser (Camas, WA) was the second of five Portland pitchers and earned his first win. He went two and a thirds giving up two runs, a hit, three walks and struck out five. Morris Austin (Keller, TX) came on in the ninth and struck out two for his third save of the year.

Offensively, Kamloops had three players going 1-4: Cooper Neville (Glendale, AZ), Jude Hall (Chilliwack, BC) and Tommy Green (Courtenay, BC). Green and Neville had RBI. For Neville, he has 13 on the year. Hall’s performance at the dish raised his batting average to .269.

Armando Briserio (Fontana, CA) drove in two runs despite going 0-2. Jack Metcho (Fairfield, CA) was 2-3 with an RBI and a run scored. His average moved to .328.

Wednesday, June 28, 2023: Pickles 15 NorthPaws 2

One bad inning sunk the NorthPaws again. Kamloops scored both their runs in the sixth inning. At the time, they trailed in the game 4-0. The Pickles exploded for 10 runs in a sixth inning where they had four hits. Blake Hiraki (Mililani, HI) leading the way with a home run.

Xaige Lancaster (Hilo, HI) hit a three-run shot in the third inning and went 2-4 with five runs batted in. He also scored two runs to lead the Pickles attack. Metcho was 2-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. While Hiracki was 1-3, with three RBI and two runs scored.

Nathan Grey (Queen Park, AZ) and Hall were each 1-4 with a run scored. Neville and Green were both0-4 with a run batted in.

Jacob Bresnahan (Sumner, WA) went two and two thirds’ innings for his first win of the year for Portland. He gave up two hits, two runs, walked two and struck out two. Griffin Almond (Thornby, ON) saw his record fall to 2-2 as he went five innings. He surrendered four runs on five hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

Thursday, June 29, 2023-Pickles 5 NorthPaws 2

For the second straight night, their performance in a single inning cost Kamloops. This time it was the eighth inning. Kamloops led 2-1 until that point when the Pickles scored four runs which sent over 28 hundred fans home happy.

Three of those four runs came off the bat of right fielder Jessie Pierce (Las Vegas, NV). He blasted a home run to raise his batting average to .333 on the year. Pierce led Portland offensively going 2-3 with three runs batted in and two runs scored. Evan Cloyd (Bakersville, CA) was 1-3 with a run scored and an RBI.

For Kamloops, Hall, Grey and Green were all 2-4. Green scored a run as well. Landon Clark (Indianapolis, IN) was the big man at the plate for the NorthPaws going 1-4 with a run batted in. Neville was 1-4 with a run batted in and a run scored.

Max Jones (Whittier, CA) was the winning pitcher. He collected his first win of the year reliving starter Nathan Shinn (Pleasanton, CA). Shinn went five innings on a four hitter, with two strikeouts and a walk. Jones gave up two hits in a single inning of work.

Austin notched his second save of the season and fourth of the year as he worked an inning and struck out two.

David Jeon (Coppel, TX) saw his record fall to 0-2. He worked an inning and two thirds of relief and gave up two hits (including Pierce’s homer). He relieved starter Hayden Walker (Albuquerque, NM). He worked six innings of two hit ball, fanning seven and walking three.

NEXT UP FOR THE NORTHPAWS:

The Paws have a three game series with their closest geographical rival, the Kelowna Falcons. The teams will play tomorrow (June 30) at Elks Stadium in Kelowna.

The two teams will then head north. In 2022, Kamloops won five of six meetings between themselves and Kelowna. The Falcons lone victory came June 18th in Kelowna, where they beat the NorthPaws 8-2. Tyrelle Chadwick (Kamloops, BC) was the losing pitcher. On that night, Chadwick pitched three innings, giving up five hits, surrendering four runs (two earned) with a strikeout and six walks.

Kamloops won twice in the Okanagan and swept the Falcons at Dearborn Ford Field . The sweep occurred August 2-4th and included an 18-7 win on the opening night. Felix Chenier-Rondeau (Blainville, ON) was two for five in that game with six runs batted in

Next home game for the NorthPaws will be Canada Day ( Saturday, July 1) against the Kelowna Falcons The same two teams will do battle on Sunday, July 2nd as well. Opening pitch Canada Day is 6:35 PM. Sunday’s tilt has a 2:05 PM start time. There will be Canada Day celebrations at Dearborn Ford Field at Norbrock Stadium on Saturday. These include a Bouncy Castle, Canadian Food specials, a Molson Tailgate Party and the Dearborn Ford Maverick Contest.

Sunday’s game will be “Family Day” at the park. Family Day is a presentation of Save On Foods.

Victoria HarbourCats – Cats Hold On in 6-5 Nail-Biter

Victoria, B.C. – The Cats hosted the Port Angeles Lefties for the first of the three game set and held on by the skin of their teeth to take a 6-5 win.

Victoria took an early advantage in this one, scoring in the second inning. After Dillon Lopez (St. Mary’s) worked a walk out of a long at-bat to leadoff the frame, the catcher immediately stole second base and came home on a single by Aidan Rice (Portland) that bounced through the middle of the infield. Rice simply would not be contained, as he stole second and third back-to-back before coming in to score from third on a groundout.

Meanwhile, it was another episode of the Jeremiah Arnett show on the defensive side. The Rice University starter and WCL All-Star was unflappable in the first four innings, shutting down the Lefties lineup to keep the top half of the line score clean.

While Arnett was doing his thing, the Cats got back to work on offence in the bottom of the fourth. Rohne Klein (San Jose State) earned himself a leadoff walk and swiped second base, coming around to the plate on a single by Dillon Lopez. Cameron Chee-Aloy (Illinois) and Michael Rodda (Palomar) got in on the fun as well with an RBI single each, and the former crossed the plate on a groundout before the end of the frame to push the lead to six.

Jeremiah Arnett continued to rumble along through three more frames, finally taking a seat after seven gleaming innings. Arnett allowed five hits on his watch (all singles) and no runs while adding nine more tallies to his impressive strikeout total this summer. The right-hander handed the ball off to Leif Friedrich (Concordia-Nebraska) for the top of the eighth. Friedrich recovered smoothly from a leadoff single to make three quick outs and move on to the bottom of the inning.

Initial responsibility of the ninth was given to Hunter Daniels (Phoenix), but after he walked the bases loaded with nobody out, Houston Tomlinson (Arkansas State) was called from the bullpen to try and finish this one off. Tomlinson would continue to waver, with walks galore bringing Port Angeles all the way back within one. A strikeout finally ended the inning and secured a close 6-5 win for the Cats.

Victoria HarbourCats – Paws Bounce Cats in Game Three

Victoria, B.C. – The Victoria HarbourCats and Kamloops NorthPaws faced off in the decider of a three-game series on Sunday afternoon, with Kamloops battling their way to a 7-3 win.

It was somewhat of a rocky start in the early going for Shea Lake (West Texas A&M) on this rainy Sunday afternoon, hitting the first batter he faced and allowing a run in the opening inning to give Kamloops an early lead. Lake found his footing for a moment in the third inning with an efficient three-up three-down frame.

BOX SCORE

Victoria came close to evening the score in the bottom of the third with Bryan Bradshaw (UCSD) on second base. Rohne Klein (San Jose State) hit a line-drive single into centre field, but Bradshaw was cut down at the plate to end the inning. The NorthPaws responded by hammering a three-run homer in their next turn on offence, growing their lead to 4-0 in the fourth inning.

The top of the fifth required the services of Northern Kentucky reliever Daniel Tovar, who let up a pair of singles but held Kamloops scoreless in his first inning of work. The going got tougher in the sixth, when the NorthPaws led off the inning with a bomb to left field, and add on another solo shot before the end of the frame.

The HarbourCats’ first run came at long last in the bottom of the sixth by way of a sacrifice fly off the bat of Rohne Klein. The home team was able to keep the line moving in inning number six, netting another run when Jacob Silva (UTSA) scored from third on a wild pitch.

Tristin Thomas (West Texas A&M) took over from Tovar for the top of the seventh. Thomas worked quickly, putting a zero on the board and getting the Cats back on the offensive. The bottom of the eighth saw another blow dealt by the Victoria offence, as Declan Brown (Ottawa University) laced a single into centre field to drive in a run and chip away at the lead.

The Cats gave it their all but ultimately came up short, coughing up the series to the NorthPaws with a 7-3 loss.

WCL STANDINGS

With the weekend series complete, the HarbourCats will return to action for a three-game set against Port Angeles this week, starting on Tuesday night at 6:35 pm.

Victoria HarbourCats – Cats Dominate NorthPaws 14-4

Victoria, B.C. – The HarbourCats bounced back after Friday night’s loss and thumped the visiting Kamloops NorthPaws 14-4 on Saturday night.

It’s impossible to predict the future in baseball, but tonight’s first inning was a pretty good sign of how this ballgame would go. Bryan Bradshaw (UCSD) drove a liner over the shortstop to lead it off for the Cats, getting a runner on base for one of the most dangerous bats in the WCL, the unstoppable David Krahn. The UBC infielder watched a couple of pitches out of the zone before teeing off on a no-doubter to Pembroke Street for his second bomb in his last two at-bats. Krahn’s ninth homer of the year not only gave an early lead to the HarbourCats, but also tied the franchise record for home runs in a season! Cameron Chee-Aloy (Illinois) drove in another on a sacrifice fly, and suddenly the home team had a three-run advantage after the first inning.

BOX SCORE

The NorthPaws barked back in the top of the second with back-to-back doubles to drive in their first run of the game. Determined to maintain the upper hand, starting pitcher Erik Rico (Fresno State) sliced through his next challengers to earn a pair of strikeouts and end the inning. There would be no such nonsense in the third, as Rico recovered from a couple of walks to set down three NorthPaws in a row.

It was only a matter of time before the Cats were back on the prowl. Krahn came up in a big spot with the bases loaded and lined a ball hard into left-centre field to widen the lead for the HarbourCats. Logan Shepherd (Mercer) followed up with a bases-clearing double to really break the game open and make it 7-1.

Erik Rico’s night came to an end after five excellent innings of one-run ball, over which he allowed just two hits and racked up a tidy nine strikeouts – just a regular Saturday night for this all-star arm.

The HarbourCats kept their foot on the gas in the fifth inning with another three-run frame. Bryan Bradshaw smacked a single to drive in two, and a Logan Shepherd singe brought David Krahn home. Entering the back half of the ballgame, Victoria now held a commanding 10-1 lead.

Davis Lee (Calgary) assumed control of the mound in the sixth inning and worked quickly, torching through the Kamloops lineup with a three-strikeout frame. The next inning was handed off to the capable hands of Houston Tomlinson (Arkansas State), who tossed a clean inning to keep the HarbourCats well out in front.

The Cats found themselves in a bases loaded jam in the top of the ninth, but the lead held strong and Victoria walked away with a 14-4 blowout victory in game two.

Kamloops and Victoria will face off one more time at 1:05 pm on Sunday with the series up for grabs!
